ten old photos

I mentioned in my last post that I’d been finding it hard to stay satisfied with my current camera, now that I know I’m getting a DSLR in a few months. So I thought I’d look through some old photos I took with an even “worse” camera, to remind myself just what a camera can do (though I’m pretty sure I fiddled with the colours of the first one). Here are some of the ones I liked best, taken between 2002 and 2004.

I remember how seriously I took photography back then. I entertained the idea of doing it professionally, and even had a few pictures published in an online magazine. I remember setting up tripods and staging scenes and playing with colours and contrast in Photoshop. It was the best.

“Back then” is when I fell in love with your photography! And seriously–amazing. The composition of the second one is so great. The screen window of #4 makes everything look cross stitched, and that is way cool. Number 5 is the one that hits me hardest—the lighting strikes hospital room anxiety in me something wicked. Even the wire rack reminds me of a hospital bed. Numbers 8 & 9 are those low-to-the-ground photos that I remember being so inspiring–I kept trying it out on my camera at the time–a super crappy digital Kodak, a dinosaur of digicams that ate AA batteries by the boatload. I could never get shots as beautiful as yours, and I don’t think it was the wide-openness of Calgary, either. And lastly–a “Salmon Andy” shot, right? Holy wayback machine, Batman! Awesome.

Aw, thank you so so much for these comments! I feel like I was somehow better at photography back then, or at least maybe I worked harder at it. Or maybe my little Canon Powershot A40 was a miracle worker.

Would it make you feel better about #5 if I told you it was just packets of sugar at Denny’s? I know you know it isn’t a hospital bed, but thinking of cheese fries instead of that might be better. And hah, I can’t believe you remember the “Salmon Andy” moniker!

That third to last guy I think I remember you taking. A million years ago.

I feel like photography came easier back then, too- or we were better at using the humble tools we had. I loved our A60. I equally loved that phase of photography. I’m excited for your DSLR.

Yes, that’s right! It must have been during our trip to Drumheller, I think, or to Sylvan Lake.

Sometimes I miss my old camera. The one I have right now is good, but that feeling isn’t there. I hope I can do a DSLR justice! I’m already planning out shots. :)
